Every private practice goes through its growing pains, but for Stacey Raybuck Schatz, too many struggles in a short amount of time almost caused her to close her PT practice. Facing an increase in local competition plus tough business challenges, she knew she had to change direction and do something different to save her practice and the jobs of her staff.
“My Clinic Was in Horrible Shape.”
The year 2014 was a turning point for Stacey. After going through the process of separating the practice from her business partner, she faced a family illness that took her away from the practice for almost half a year—and also left her without a paycheck.
“Staff morale was at an all-time low,” recalls Stacey. “I was basically paying my staff but not able to pay myself, plus I ended up paying $46K out of pocket for my daughter’s healthcare, so things were bad. I really wrestled with the idea of selling my practice and getting out. I was mentally drained.”
Stacey faced two options: sell the practice or turn it around. After acknowledging she wouldn’t be happy working for someone else, Stacey made a firm decision to do whatever it took to completely transform her practice, which is when she discovered Breakthrough, the Killer Marketing Course, and Product X.
Charting a New Direction with Direct Access Marketing
To start thinking outside of the box, Stacey decided that direct access marketing was her best bet at differentiating herself and growing her practice. She turned to Killer Marketing and Product X to market PT direct to the consumer and not just keep her doors open, but also take her practice to its highest-ever level of profitability.
“I was all-in because it was something new, something disruptive to the industry in the sense that nobody was doing it,” says Stacey, noting that she believed Product X had the greatest potential to reach an audience that her practice was not able to connect with.
Once she laid the groundwork for her new marketing strategy, she turned to Product X to “turn up the faucet” so she could hire more PTs and staff to get her clinic to the next level.
“When I started with Killer Marketing, I made a mental decision to own it all,” Stacey explains. “Whatever results I get from this, I own it—good, bad, or indifferent.” Once she took ownership, she had the drive to commit to it and do it right.
Stacey started creating a new pathway from her present situation to the destination, which was a complete change from where her practice had been heading. Most importantly, she shared this new roadmap with her team to get them on board and ensure they were invested in the journey, too.
“Our new destination was the clinic we really wanted to be, one that’s well-run, that patients rave about, that’s profitable enough to give back to the community, and one that employees love to be part of.”
After Product X: More Patients, More Therapists, More Revenue
Stacey and her team started Product X with just one workshop offer. Sometimes, the effects of those workshops were immediately obvious in terms of patient volume and revenue.
But Stacey also knows that there are major indirect benefits of building a strong presence in the community that will continue to work in their favor. They’re not as easy to measure, but their impact is hard to ignore.
“I have some people come into the clinic and say they didn’t sign up for the workshop but have seen us on Facebook. They feel like they know us, they notice our content, and that also leads to a higher volume in the clinic.”
In the past three years in the clinic, Stacey reveals they’re up 118% in revenue, more than doubling the practice. This year, their goal is to double their performance from 2015 to generate 200% growth in four years. To get there, Stacey credits a combination of Product X and implementing the skills she learned through Killer Marketing.
“We just added the shoulder funnel and the Google Adwords funnel, and I’m excited to see how that helps us get to the next level.”
The earlier prospect of having to shut her doors is no longer a threat. Now, her biggest worry is that they’re about to hit capacity for their current space. This is something Stacey hadn’t anticipated, but she’s hopeful about a whole new opportunity this opens up.
“Doing workshops and programs has given us a great opportunity to have multiple locations or a larger space to grow into. We can turn the faucet up or down and scale as we need.”
With an entrepreneurial spirit, Stacey is always looking for opportunities to chart a new course in private practice physical therapy. She knows where she wants to go and worries about the challenges later, often finding a better, smarter, faster way to overcome challenges without letting them get in the way of doing business.
“There will always be challenges. But if you look at every challenge and let it slow you down, you’re never going to reach the goal that you set, you’ll never be the leader your team is going to rely on, and you won’t be able to paint that vision for them to reach whatever destination you’ve set.”
Final Word: Fast Track to 200% Growth in Four Years
Stacey credits the mindset change for starting her new path to growth and maintaining that mindset for staying on track to nearly tripling her revenue since 2015. She also knows that growth wouldn’t have been possible had she not shown her staff how hard she was willing to work for them to reach their new destination.
“The turnaround for the clinic starts with the owner,” admits Stacey. “You have to own that decision.”

"Staff morale was at an all-time low... I was basically paying my staff but not able to pay myself..."
The 1st thing Stacy did was own “Whatever results I get from this, I own it—good, bad, or indifferent.” Once she took ownership, creating a Roadmap was the next step. She then started the PT Workshops and the team was able to drive in more patients than ever before, boosting everyone's morale.
Continuing to grow the company presence in Facebook and in the community Stacy and team were able to increase profits and patient flow.
